Jayhawks Participate in Flag Ceremonies

GWANGJU, Korea – Day One at the 2015 World University Games (WUG) for Kansas men’s basketball, the USA National Team for WUG, began with the Flag Ceremony Tuesday morning. Belgium, Canada and the United States teams present participated in the approximately 30 minute celebration.
 
GUOC President and Mayor of Gwangju Yoon Janghyun welcomed each of the countries as the athletes from the 21 sports posed for photos and were entertained with dancers from the area. Following the Flag Ceremony, the KU contingent, along with the USA Soccer squad participated in an orientation with the USA officials which included KU graduate Craig Jonas, deputy head of the USA Delegation.   
 
The USA has nearly 600 athletes, the most ever for the U.S. for a World University Games which began in 1965. Also referred to as Universiade Gwangju 2015, this is the first time the USA will field a team in all 21 sports of the Games.
 
With the late arrival, approximately 2 a.m. in Gwanju, most of the Jayhawks took in some sights around the Athlete Village before resting for a 7 p.m. practice at Gwangju High School.
