Two-Minute Drill: Re-energized

Videos Daily Video

Following a Sunday filled with worship, meetings and bowling—yes bowling, the Jayhawks returned to their normal work schedule Monday.

In another effort to break up the mental fatigue of Fall Camp, head coach David Beaty surprised the players with an outing to Royal Crest Lanes in Lawrence Sunday evening. The players were assigned to teams and there were a couple of lanes filled with staff members, as well.

Several players said to be the top bowlers were safety Hunter January, linebacker Joe Dineen Jr., wide receiver LaQuvionte Gonazales, wide receiver Derrick Neal and safety Greg Allen, while running game coordinator/offensive line coach Zach Yenser took home top honors amongst the staff members in attendance.

No official scores were reported, but it’s rumored that linebacker Schyler Miles let his whole team down with his paltry score of 80.

Beaty was unable to attend the bowling outing himself, as he was busy throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at KU Day at the K hosted by the Kansas City Royals. Nonetheless, the outing was a fun way to cap off a productive week.

Monday was a day that saw the team start strong with a morning lift and finish with an energy-filled two and a half hour practice. There was definitely a spark to start the second full week of camp and it was noticeable all over the field.

Linebackers coach Kevin Kane met with the media Monday afternoon and spoke at length about his grading system and the importance of having your positive plays outnumber your negative plays by at least a 3:1 ratio in order to find success in games. When the Jayhawks hit the field later in the day, it seemed like that message had been received loud and clear.

On the offensive side of the ball, senior wide receiver Tre’ Parmalee stood out as he made several fantastic grabs across the middle in tight coverage. Another player who continues to impress is junior wide receiver Joshua Stanford, who joined the program after transferring from Virginia Tech. Stanford used his sure hands to haul in catch after catch during Monday’s workout.

On the defensive side of the ball freshman cornerback Tyrone Miller, Jr., has steadily climbed the ranks and is a player the coaching staff has been pleased with despite it being his first season on the college scene. Miller shows progress each day and is a sponge as far as picking up knowledge from cornerbacks coach Kenny Perry.

Senior defensive tackle Kapil Fletcher had a dominant day on the interior. Fletcher, who gained some valuable experience during the 2014 season, is a player who has really thrived under first-year defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux. He was disruptive on the line Monday and has had a solid Fall Camp thus far.
