DURHAM, North Carolina – Kansas men’s golf was sitting near the top of the leaderboard after a strong first round to begin the Rod Myers Invitational, but finished the day near the middle of the pack, in 8th of 14 teams at Duke Golf Club Saturday.
The Jayhawks completed the opening round of the tournament with a score of 291 (+3), just five strokes behind the field leader, then carded an 8-over 296 in the second round on the par-72, 7,136-yard course.
“We played pretty average today,” head coach Jamie Bermel said. “We made some careless errors and those hurt our team score significantly. Freshman Charlie Hillier was pretty good for his first outing, (but) we need to have a good round on Sunday and see if we can move up in the standings.”
Wake Forest led the team leaderboard and was 9-under (567) after two rounds, one stroke ahead of tournament-host Duke (568). The Demon Deacons were boosted by Will Zalatoris, who led the tournament field with two rounds of 66 (-6) and was 12-under at the end of the first day.
Kansas top scorer was senior Connor Peck. His 69 (-3) in the afternoon round helped him climb his way into the top-10, finishing with a day one total of 143 (-1). Behind Peck on the Jayhawk leaderboard was freshman Charlie Hillier.
It didn’t take long for Hillier to get accustomed to collegiate golf, as the New Zealand native walked off the course after the first round just two strokes under par. He struggled to follow his strong opening round in the afternoon though, shooting a 3-over 75, but remained among the tournament’s top-20 in 17th.
Kansas usual leader, Chase Hanna, carded the fourth-best effort for the Jayhawks and will look to regain his old form in the final round. In his two rounds of 2015-16, he shot a 75 and 76, respectively, which was good enough to finish tied for 50th place.
Sophomore Daniel Hudson had a solid morning, shooting an even-par 72. Hudson’s solid first day consisted of a total of four birdies and 25 pars, which ranks tied for sixth. Rounding off the Jayhawk squad was sophomore Spencer Painton, who struggled during the opening rounds of the new season, ending the day with a total of 154 (+10).
The Rod Myers Invitational concludes with a single round on Sunday.
