Football Professional Round Up: Week One

LAWRENCE, Kan. – With the Canadian Football League in full swing and the conclusion of the first slate of games in the 2015 National Football League season on Sunday, 12 Jayhawks have etched their names onto professional rosters. A weekly recap of how Kansas football players fared in the professional ranks of the National Football League and the Canadian Football League is below.
 
John Cornish – Calgary Stampeders (CFL)
So far, Cornish has started five games and has scored three touchdowns on 61 carries, totaling 325 yards. Cornish has also caught seven passes for 48 yards. He was named a CFL top performer in Week 4 when he rushed for 120 yards against Winnipeg.
 
Chris Harris – Denver Broncos
Harris notched three tackles and recorded one tackle-for-loss in Denver’s 19-13 opening-week win versus Baltimore.
 
Tanner Hawkinson – San Francisco 49ers
Hawkinson is a member of the San Francisco 49ers who have a bout on Monday Night Football with the Minnesota Vikings. Hawkinson is an active member on San Francisco’s practice squad.
 
Ben Heeney – Oakland Raiders
Heeney saw action in his first-career regular season game as his Oakland Raiders fell to the Cincinnati Bengals 33-13. Heeney did not record a statistic in the contest.
 
Steven Johnson – Tennessee Titans
In his first game with the Titans, Johnson made one stop in helping to secure Tennessee’s 42-14 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
 
Dexter McDonald – Oakland Raiders
McDonald saw action in his first-career regular season game as his Oakland Raiders fell to the Cincinnati Bengals 33-13. McDonald did not record a statistic in the contest.
 
Bradley McDougald – Tampa Bay Buccaneers
McDouglad was a bright spot in the Bucs’ secondary, making four tackles – three solo – in Tampa Bay’s 42-14 loss to Tennessee.
 
Toben Opurum – New Orleans Saints
Opurum did not record any statistics in the Saints’ 31-19 loss to the Arizona Cardinals Sunday.
 
JaCorey Shepherd – Philadelphia Eagles
Shepherd is sidelined on the Eagles injured reserve list after tearing his ACL in the preseason.
 
Kevin Short – Seattle Seahawks
Short is a member of Seattle’s practice squad. The Seahawks lost to the St. Louis Rams in overtime, 34-31.  
 
Darrell Stuckey – San Diego Chargers
Stuckey did not record any statistics in the Chargers’ five-point, 33-28, win over the Detroit Lions.
 
Aqib Talib – Denver Broncos
Talib had a big day in the Broncos’ week one victory over Baltimore. He totaled three tackles and defended two passes, but the biggest play was his go-ahead 51-yard interception return for a touchdown at the end of the third quarter, sealing Denver’s, 19-13, win.
