MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Kansas women’s golf team ended the first of two days of the Minnesota Invitational shooting a two-round 626 (+50) and is in 12th place heading into Tuesday’s final round.

KU is nine shots behind Kentucky in 11th. Purdue leads the event with a two-round 586 (+10), four shots ahead of East Carolina in the 12-team field.

Kansas senior Yupaporn Kawinpakorn once again led the Jayhawks with a two-round 149 (+5) and is on pace for her 25th career top-20 finish as she is tied for 13th in the 68-golfer field. She trails leader Celia Keunster of host Minnesota by nine strokes heading into Tuesday.

The Jayhawks’ struggles at the Minikahda Club began with freshman Victoria Chandra’s disqualification in the first round. Her disqualification forced Kansas to count all four of her teammates’ scores, without the ability to drop the lowest. The team shot 314 (+26). Kawinpakorn carded a 74 (+2) and was followed by Laine Evans and Ariadna Fonseca. Both freshmen recorded a 77 (+5) in the first round. Sophomore Pitsinee Winyarat shot an 86 (+14) in her opening round.

“Victoria was disqualified for signing for an incorrect score, specifically for a four when she really had a five,” KU head coach Erin O’Neil explained. “It’s a hard lesson to learn but better to learn it earlier in your career rather than later and there’s no doubt it’s something she will never do again.”

Kansas improved in the second round shooting a 312 (+24). Kawinpakorn and Evans both stayed under 80, Kawinpakorn with a 75 (+3) and Evans with a 78 (+6). Chandra bounced back from her first round disqualification with a 79 (+7). Fonseca shot an 80 +(8). Winyarat improved from her opening round by five strokes to card an 81 (+9).

Evans and Fonseca are tied-40th and tied-49th, respectively. Winyarat starts the third round tied for 64th. Chandra, due to her disqualification in the first round, placed last for the day out of the 68 total golfers.

“This is a tough course that requires accuracy off the tee and good course management/mental toughness when you do get in trouble. When we missed a green or tee shot we compounded it by not executing shots around the greens where we could have saved shots,” O’Neil said. “As a group we are young, raw and have lots to learn yet we are also very talented. The potential is there for great improvement but we must be patient, quick to learn and fully committed to our shots to shoot the scores we are capable of shooting.”

Sophomore MacKenzie Sexe, playing 30 minutes away from her hometown of Savage, Minnesota, is competing as an individual and is tied for 59th with a two-round score of 161 (+17).

Among the highlights of Monday’s action was University of Kentucky golfer Megan Kinney’s hole-in-one on the sixth hole in the second round. Her feat came on a par-3 hole that was 166 yards long.

The Minnesota Invitational will conclude on Tuesday with the third and final round. Tee-off is at 9 a.m. Live scoring can be found at golfstat.com
