MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Kansas senior women’s golfer Yupaporn “Mook” Kawinpakorn posted her fifth-straight and 21st career top-10 finish tying for 10th at the Minnesota Invitational Tuesday at Minikahda Club in Minneapolis.
“I’m proud of Mook for earning her 21st top 10 career finish,” KU head coach Erin O’Neil said. “She wasn’t hitting it great today but fought hard to finish strong against a tough field.”
As a team, KU finished 12th at the Minnesota Invitational with a 943 (+79), which included a 317 (+29) in Tuesday’s final round. Purdue won the team title with a three-round 884 (+20), which was two strokes better than runner-up East Carolina at 886 (+22).
Kawinpakorn ended with a 223 (+7) and tied Purdue’s Anna Appert Lund and Kentucky’s Jordan Chael for 10th place. It marked Kawinpakorn’s fifth-consecutive top-10 placement going back to last season, including both tourneys in 2015-16. She recorded a 74 (+2) in the third round to vault up three spots to tie for 10th. Kawinpakorn trailed individual champion Celia Kuenster of host Minnesota by 10 strokes. Last year, Kawinpakorn tied for 28th with a 229 (+13) at the Minnesota Invitational.
Freshman Ariadna Fonseca Diaz tied for 49th in the 68-golfer field after carding 235 (+19). Fellow freshman Laine Evans tied for 56th after shooting 237 (+23). Sophomore Pitsinee Winyarat placed 65th with a 250 (+36). Freshman Victoria Chandra finished 67th out of 68 golfers as she received a disqualification in the first round. She followed up a 79 (+7) in the second round with an 88 (+16) in Tuesday’s final round. Sophomore MacKenzie Sexe competed as an individual and tied for 58th with a 238 (+24).
Despite the disappointing placement in the final rankings, O’Neil was very happy to see her young squad gain valuable experience on a difficult course.
“This was a tough tournament for us. We have a very young squad which means there will be some bumps in the road especially in the beginning however we are going to take advantage of the experience that has been given to us and use it to make us stronger in the weeks to come,” O’Neil said. “I’m not discouraged at all, we have a great group of players who have talent and they want to improve.”
The Jayhawks will touch down in Lawrence, Kansas for a couple days before heading out to the Belmar Golf Club in Norman, Oklahoma to compete in the Schooner Classic, September 19-21.
