Round Two Results
Madison, Wis. – Following a day one performance that featured two Jayhawks in the top-five individual leaderboard, the Kansas men’s golf team moved within one stroke of overall leader Miami of Ohio. After round two of the Badger Invitational, the Jayhawks find themselves in second place with scores of 283-286–569 (-7).
Heading into Tuesday’s final round, junior Chase Hanna will look to follow up Monday’s two-under, 70, and close the gap between him and individual leader Patrick Flavin from Miami. He currently sits three strokes back from Flavin, with a score of 139 (-5) and leads all players with 11 birdies throughout the entire event.
“We played pretty well, with the exception of a few holes,” head coach Jamie Bermel said. “Dan (Daniel Hudson), Chase (Hanna) and Connor (Peck) really played solid, but we just couldn’t get a fourth score.”
Hudson, who was disqualified from last year’s competition, improved his score from Sunday’s even-72 to a three-under, 69 on Monday. The sophomore moved up seven spots on the leaderboard, as he currently finds himself tied for fifth place. Should Hudson finish the tournament in the top-five, it will be the highest finish in his career.
As one of the senior leaders on this year’s squad, Peck’s veteran leadership was much needed on Monday. He carded a 70 (-2) in the second round, and saw himself climb up the leaderboard nine spots, into the top-10 and finishing the day tied for eighth.
Senior Ben Welle, who traditionally has done well at University Ridge Golf Course, has struggled so far in the event, but the Ram Masters Invitational Champion from a week ago, hopes to come out strong for the final round on Tuesday. Following Sunday’s first round 76 (+4), Welle carded a 77 (+5) on Monday, putting him nine strokes over par for the tournament.
After having difficulties on day two of the tournament, freshman Charlie Hillier will look to bounce back from his 77 (+5) performance on Monday, and join his teammates amongst the tournament’s leaders.
In just his second tournament of his collegiate career, Hillier’s fellow classmate Drake Hull, improved his score from the first round. On Monday, he too recorded a 77 (+5), which was good enough to move him three spots on the leaderboard and be tied for 54th place.
“We need all five guys competing every hole, every shot and play solid to eliminate the big numbers. If we do that, we should be fine,” Bermel said.
The third and final round of the Badger Invitational will held on Tuesday, September 29 at University Ridge Golf Course. Live stats and scoring can be followed on birdiefire.com.
