MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas Women’s Golf team sat tied for seventh with the Arkansas-Little Rock at the end of day one of the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational at Colbert Hills. Through one and a half rounds, Kansas shot 312 (+33) and remained 26 strokes behind first-place SMU. Though two rounds were supposed to be played Monday, weather conditions caused the competition to be suspended midway through the second round.
Kansas freshman Ari Fonseca carded KU’s second-lowest score Monday.
Kansas senior Yupaporn Kawinpakorn led the Jayhawks after shooting even par on the day, good enough to be tied for third in the 69-golfer field. She was followed by freshman Ariadna Fonseca who finished +7 on the day. KU sophomores Pitsinee Winyarat and MacKenzie Sexe were both tied for 49th place after shooting +14. Sophomore Kallie Gonzales rounded out the Kansas lineup with a +17. Individuals Laine Evans and Victoria Chandra, both freshmen, tied for 27th place after shooting +9.

Kawinpakorn looks to continue KU’s two-year streak of winning the individual championship at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational. She was three strokes out of first place after recording an even-par 72 the first round and was on pace to shoot for par the second round as well. The trio of freshman had promising starts to their Kansas careers, shooting a combined +25 on the day and recording the three lowest scores on the team after Kawinpakorn.

The Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational will conclude Tuesday starting at 7:20 a.m., earlier than the previously scheduled 8:15 a.m. start to allow for the finish of play in round two. Live scoring can be found at Golfstat.com.
