Heptathletes Get Jayhawk Classic Underway

Sophomore Lucas Shaw posted career bests in each of the first four events of the heptathlon Thursday afternoon at the Jayhawk Classic.

Heptathlon Results Day 1

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Two members at the Kansas men’s track & field squad kicked off the Jayhawk Classic Thursday afternoon, competing in the first four events of the men’s heptathlon inside Anschutz Pavilion. Junior Dylan Poirier currently sits in second place with 2,795 points, 283 points behind the leader, Sam Houston State’s Tyler Adams. Not far behind is sophomore Lucas Shaw who amassed a first-day total of 2,406 and sits in seventh place.
 
Each of the Crimson and Blue-clad athletes are taking part in their first heptathlon of the season. The seven-event competition was also being held for the second time in Anschutz Pavilion’s 29-year history.
 
The Jayhawk duo began the day in the 60-meter dash. Poirier was the fastest of the 13-man competition, clocking in with a new career best of 7.09. Shaw added a personal best time of his own, crossing the finish in 7.43 to finish eighth.
 
With the first-event jitters out of the way, both Jayhawks once again took posted career best marks in the day’s second event, the long jump. With a leap of 6.64 meters (21’9½”), Poirier finished second behind Adams. Shaw leaped to a distance of 5.94 meters (19’6″) to claim ninth.
 
In the shot put, Shaw was again the top Jayhawk after he posted the competition’s second-farthest throw and his third personal record mark of the day, a toss of 11.37 meters (37’3¾”). Poirier’s best throw was not for behind, a career best mark that measured 11.27 meters (36’11¾”), which earned him 562 points.
 
The final event of the day saw Poirier leap to an enormous personal best and post a third-place finish in the high jump. Poirier cleared a top bar of 1.83 meters (6’0″) to pick up 653 points and secure second-place in the overnight standings. Shaw leaped over a height of 1.68 meters (5’6″) to tally 528 points in his final outing of the day.
 
Poirier will enter the second day of competition 283 points behind Adams. Shaw collected 2,406 points over his first four events, enough to place him in seventh with three events remaining.
 
The Jayhawk Classic will turn into full gear Friday with dozens of events to be held throughout the day inside Anschutz Pavilion. The heptathlon will begin its final day of competition at 9:20 a.m., with the 60-meter hurdles.
