FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Kansas women’s tennis moved to 4-0 on the 2016 season with another impressive win, this time a 4-1 victory over 45th-ranked Purdue Saturday afternoon at the Billingsley Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas. The win over the Boilermakers was KU’s second win over a ranked team in consecutive days as the Jayhawks topped No. 36 Arkansas Friday, 4-1.
“Today was a great team win,” said Kansas head coach Todd Chapman. “The girls did a tremendous job of bouncing back from a physical match against Arkansas yesterday. My coaching staff Caroline (Lilley) and Jacob (Mishkin), were fantastic with the team today and I could not be more pride of the fight we played with on the courts.”
For the second-straight match, Kansas started off the match by securing the doubles point after claiming wins on two of the three doubles courts. Sophomore Smith Hinton and freshman Anastasiya Rychagova got the Jayhawks moving in the right direction as the duo bested Purdue’s Clauda Escribins and Natalia Davila, 6-2, on court three. Purdue’s pair of Deborah Suarez and Krisztina Kapitany topped KU’s pair of freshmen, Nina Khmelnitckaia and Janet Koch, 6-3, on court one to even the doubles battle. KU then claimed the point as senior Maria Jose Cardona and sophomore Summer Collins topped Purdue’s Andjela Djokovic and Marta Ruedas-Burgos, 6-2, on court two.
In singles action KU got wins on court one, two and six to forge the 4-1 win over Purdue. Rychagova, who is currently ranked No. 45 in the ITA singles rankings, led the Jayhawk charge as she topped Suarez, 6-1, 6-1, on court one. Hinton as picked up a win in straight-sets, topping Djokovic, 6-2, 6-3, on court two. Cardona was the third Jayhawk to put a point on the board as she bested Ruedas-Borgas in come-from-behind fashion, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, on court six.
“Some of our players may not have played their best tennis, but they found a way to compete and help the team pick up the win,” said Chapman. “Maria (Jose Cardona) is down a set and 3-0 and completely stepped up like the senior she is and came back and won to clinch the match.
“We are excited about coming here and getting two top-45 wins. We will enjoy it on the ride back to Lawrence and then our focus and attention will shift to next weekend and our matches at home against North Texas and Colorado.”

KU will return to the friendly confines of the Jayhawk Tennis Center for seven-straight home matches, beginning with North Texas on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 1 p.m. Following KU’s match against North Texas, the Jayhawks will play host to Colorado (Feb. 7), Wichita State (Feb. 28), New Mexico (Feb. 29), SMU (March 4), Denver (March 6) and Baylor (March 8).
