PEARLAND, Texas – Kansas men’s golf finds itself at the top of the leaderboard for the second consecutive event, relying on both its experience and new talent, with sophomore Charlie Hillier, sophomore Jake Scarrow and senior Chase Hanna all placing in the top-five in the Bayou City Collegiate at Golfcrest Country Club.

“Anytime we win, it’s a great team effort and that was no different this week,” head coach Jamie Bermel said. “We had a nice lead going into the last round and just kept playing disciplined golf. We played solid all day (Tuesday) and never let any team make a run at us. Got off to a solid start and then the rain came and we just kept making pars.”

With a win at the Bayou City, the Jayhawks have now won six times in just the last 15 events. As the only team under par, Kansas’ 12-under-par, 852, put them ahead of their closest competitor, Houston, by 17 strokes. The Jayhawks were able to put themselves in a solid position, starting the final round at 13-under-par.

For his fourth straight event, Hillier placed in the top-20, finishing the tournament at six-under par. Hillier entered the final day in the lead after recording a 67 followed by a 70 in the first two rounds. A final round 73 was not enough to earn the win as Hillier finished tied for second, three strokes back from the champion Mans Berglund from Lamar. This marks the fourth top-five finish of Hillier’s career.

“Charlie seems to be playing well,” Bermel said. “He’s very experienced and has played well in all four events. Got nothing out of his round (Tuesday) or he would have won the individual title.”

In just his second event as a Jayhawk, Scarrow recorded the best round of the team on the final day, posting a two-under-par 70, collecting four birdies on the back nine. After struggles in the first round, Scarrow responded with a 69 in round two and finished the entire event at three-under-par, earning a fourth place finish.

“Happy for Jake,” Bermel said. “He’s got a lot of game and when he learns how to manage his game a little better he will do well in every event. Made a last minute decision to put him in the lineup and it obviously worked out.”

Breaking the top-five for a second straight week, Hanna ended the day tied for fifth at two-under-par for the event. Hanna started the tournament strong with a two-under-par, 70, and as we have seen all season, consistency was on his side as he played the second and third rounds at even par. Hanna now has six top-five finishes in his career.

Junior Dan Sutton also made significant contributions for Kansas, recording his second straight finish within the top-20. With a strong start in the first two rounds, recording a 70 and 72, Sutton shot a four-over-par 76 in the final round to put him two-over-par for the tournament and tied for 16th.

After a shaky start to the tournament with a 77 in the first round, junior Dan Hudson was able to respond in the second round with a 71. Unfortunately, challenging conditions resulted in a final round 74 for Hudson, putting him tied for 39th at six-over-par for the event. Redshirt-freshman Alex Moorman, who played as an individual, also ran into struggles, finishing the tournament at nine-over-par and tied for 54th.

“Happy for the guys,” Bermel said. “We only have one senior on the team, but we have some younger guys that love to compete.

To continue its 2016 campaign, Kansas will travel to Vero Beach, Fla., to compete in the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational. The event will take place October 24-25.
