Kansas successful at the second day of ITA Central Regionals
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum, Janet Koch and Anastasia Rychagova each posted 3-0 records Friday to pace the Kansas tennis team and now find themselves in the round of 16 of the singles bracket at the ITA Central Regionals presented by Oracle.
Koch and Rychagova teamed up for the doubles bracket and earned an 8-3 win over Montana Crawford and Carin Runefelt of Iowa. Bernard-Feigenbaum, paired with Nina Khmelnitckaia, topped Creighton’s duo of Michaela Henne and Katherine Nelson, 8-2. KU freshmen Tatiana Nikolaeva and Maria Toran Ribes lost to Wichita State’s Giulia Guidetti and Tanaporn Thongsing, 8-1.
“I thought we had a solid day,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “Two of our doubles teams really started off well and played with great passion. We were able to pull out all of our second round singles and advance everyone into the third round which is not easy to do.”
As Chapman indicated, Toran Ribes, Khmelnitckaia, Rychagova, Koch, Nikolaeva and Bernard-Feigenbaum all notched wins to continue on to the round of 32.
Toran Ribes outlasted Kati Matysova of Nebraska in a three-set match, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. Khmelnitckaia topped Southern Illinois-Edwardsville’s Callaghan Adams, 6-2, 6-2. Rychagova continued her winning ways with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Aimee Tarun of Iowa.
Koch topped Tulsa’s Vera Ploner, 6-0, 6-2. Nikolaeva defeated Maja Vujic of Minnesota, 6-1, 6-3. Bernard-Feigenbaum topped Mehvish Safdar of Minnesota, 6-4, 6-3.
In the third round of singles, Rychagova, Koch and Bernard-Feigenbaum all earned wins to move onto the round of 16. Rychagova topped Ana Garcia-Navas of Kansas State, 6-2, 6-4. Koch was able to move past Minnesota’s Cammy Frei, 6-1, 6-4. Bernard-Feigenbaum advanced by beating Caroline Costamagna of Kansas State, 6-2, 6-3.
“I thought in the third round singles matches we had three players who found reasons to be successful,” said Chapman. “That was the difference between winning and losing those matches. I felt like we could have snuck another player or two into the fourth round (Saturday), but in those matches we didn’t handle adversity well enough to advance.”
Toran Ribes dropped her match to Oklahoma State’s Carla Tur Mari, 6-2, 6-3. Khmelnitckaia also fell short against Rongrong Leenabanchong of Tulsa, 6-4, 6-3, and Nikolaeva dropped a 6-3, 6-1 match to No. 72-ranked Lily Miyazaki of Oklahoma.
Collectively, the Jayhawks were 11-4 on the day, including singles and doubles play, and are 17-4 for the event.
“I am proud that we have three singles players and two doubles teams still alive,” said Chapman. “We look forward to another set of battles (Saturday).”
