Jayhawks advance four to the quarterfinals at ITA Central Regionals

Minneapolis, Minn. – Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and Anastasia Rychagova each posted 3-0 records again on Saturday and find themselves among four Jayhawks advancing to the quarterfinals of the singles and doubles brackets at the ITA Central Regionals presented by Oracle.

Janet Koch paired with Rychagova to notch an 8-4 win over Tess Herder and Kenya Williams of Drake. The duo earned their second win of the day against K-State’s Ana Garcia-Navas and Millie Stretton, 8-3. Bernard-Feigenbaum and Nina Khmelnitckaia teamed up to defeat Hayley Haakenstad and Claire Reifeis of Nebraska, 8-0. The pair topped Minnesota’s Cammy Frei and Caroline Ryba to earn their second win of the day, 8-4.

“We played really good doubles today (Saturday),” said head coach Todd Chapman. “I am really proud of the way we are progressing with our doubles. The first two tournaments of the year we struggled with our doubles play. We made some changes in our teams and the girls have really bought into the changes and are playing really well.”

Rychagova topped Missouri’s Brianna Lashway, 6-0, 6-1, to move on. To join her, Bernard-Feigenbaum defeated Tanaporn Thongsing of Wichita State in a three-set match, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

“I thought we competed really well in singles,” said Chapman. “We are excited to get Nastia (Rychagova) and Tess (Bernard-Feigenbaum) into the quarterfinals.”

Koch dropped a tough three-set match, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-3, to No. 72-ranked Lily Miyazaki of Oklahoma.

Tatiana Nikolaeva and Maria Toran Ribes paired up to beat Jieke Stroobant and Sydney Wolfe of Northern Iowa, 8-3 in consolation. Also in consolation, Nikolaeva topped Victoria Roberts of Arkansas State 6-0, 6-0. Toran Ribes earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over South Dakota State’s Jasmin Rosa. Khmelnitckaia dropped her consolation match to Claire Reifeis of Nebraska, 6-4, 7-5.

“Sunday is a big day for us,” said Chapman. “The girls are excited for the opportunities they have in singles and doubles.

Doubles will begin at 9:00 a.m. Sunday with singles following at 12:30 for the chance to advance to the semifinals in both brackets.
