Jayhawks fall short on the final day

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Kansas’ Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and Nina Khmelnitckaia’s chase for the doubles title fell short after dropping a 6-4, 6-0 match to the No. 36-ranked Vladica Babic and Carla Tur Mari of Oklahoma State in at the ITA Central Regionals presented by Oracle Monday, while Anastasia Rychagova was bumped from the semifinals of the singles draw after falling in a three-set match.

“(Monday) definitely did not turn out the way we wanted or had hoped it would,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “It is a disappointing end to a great tournament by all the girls. We now have the opportunity to move forward and get better in the areas that were exposed and also learn from all of the really positive things that occurred this weekend as well.”

With adrenaline still pumping from her doubles title, Oklahoma State’s Tur Mari was able to rally back after a first set loss and tough second set to defeat Rychagova and win the match, 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3, to earn a berth to the singles championship.

“This program has come a long way, but there is disappointment in finishing the way we did (Monday),” said Chapman. “The girls are no longer satisfied with what used to be something to celebrate. I know they are all ready to get back on the court and continue to develop and get ready for our last couple fall events. We have continued to improve as the fall season has progressed and that will continue to be our focus moving forward.”

They Jayhawks will return to action at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic which begins on October 28.
