VERO BEACH, Fla. – Recording all three rounds under par, junior Daniel Hudson led Kansas to a ninth-place finish in the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational Tuesday afternoon, ending the Jayhawks’ two-event win streak.
“We just couldn’t get anything going either day,” head coach Jamie Bermel said. “Some days putts go in, some days they lip out. Unfortunately, we were a little off this week and got beat by a lot of teams.”
Consistency was the theme for Hudson throughout the event, finishing three-under-par for the tournament. Hudson managed to post a one-under-par, 71, in all three of his rounds earning a tie for 19th. Hudson was able to break the top-20 for the second time this season and the 10th time for his career.
Taking advantage of his back nine at the Quail Valley Golf Club, Scarrow found his groove, collecting four of his five total birdies on the day. Unfortunately, a double bogey on his 17th hole caused Scarrow to drop back to one-under-par for the round and one-over-par for the tournament, tying for 35th.
After recording two of the better rounds for the Jayhawks Monday, junior Daniel Sutton started the final day at one-under-par. Sutton played even par for the majority of the round but bogeys on the final two holes caused him to post a 74, putting him tied for 35th.
Despite a birdie to open the final round, senior Chase Hanna ran into struggles, recording bogeys on three of the four following holes. Hanna was able to keep his composure and responded with an eagle on the par-five 14th. Playing the remainder of the round fairly consistent, Hanna finished tied for 51st at five-over-par for the event. This marks the first time this season that Hanna has not placed in the top-15.
Sophomore Charlie Hillier managed to bounce back from struggles in day one, finishing the final round with a 73. Hillier finished tied for 57th at seven-over-par.
Kansas competed in one of the most difficult fields yet, with Michigan State leading the way, followed by North Florida and Arkansas, all of which are ranked in the top-50. The Jayhawks also finished seven strokes behind No. 22 Liberty.
“We need to work on our long irons and par-three scoring,” Bermel said. “Dan Hudson was solid all week and the other guys were pretty average. We need a good week of practice and to correct a few things before our next event.”
Kansas will compete in its final event of the fall campaign from November 4-6 at the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii.
