LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawks matched the department record for both the federal rate and graduation success rate, bolstered by 12 teams with a GSR of 80 percent or better, according to the latest NCAA data released Tuesday. This data measures the graduation rates achieved by scholarship student-athletes who entered KU from 2006 to 2009.
Included among these figures is another perfect GSR score from men’s basketball and a record-setting performance by football.
Kansas matched its best single-year federal graduation rate with 72 percent of the 2006-09 cohort graduating and a tally of 85 percent for GSR, an adjusted measure specific to athletics which accounts for transfers and professional opportunities. Kansas men’s basketball turned in a perfect GSR for the fifth-straight school year while the football program turned in a program-best 81.
The Graduation Success Rate includes transfers and student-athletes who leave in good academic standing, unlike the federal rate, which does not count transfers and does not account for those who leave in good academic standing. The GSR and federal rate calculations measure graduation over a six-year period from initial college enrollment. There is no NCAA penalty for a poor GSR score and conversely no reward, but the number provides a more accurate snapshot of student-athlete academic performance than the federal graduation rate.
While Kansas has continued to churn out conference champions and NCAA Tournament participants on the playing field, the department’s academic health remains strong with the 71 percent four-year federal rate nearly 10 percent higher than the general KU student body (62).
Kansas men’s basketball (100), women’s golf (100), soccer (92) and rowing (90) all posted GSRs of 90 percent or better.
As a whole, the department has achieved a GSR of 84 percent or higher in each of the past five years, including the previous high of 85 two years ago.
