BOCA CHICA, Dominican Republic – In the spirit of giving back to the community, the Kansas baseball team traveled down the road to Escuela Marta Rosa Castillo School to interact with the local youth.

The scheduled visit included games in the school courtyard where the team taught the kids how to play duck, duck, goose, basketball, field ground balls and red rover. However, the highlight of the trip came when head coach Ritch Price taught the children three words of English.

Rock. Chalk. Jayhawk.

The local kids chanted “Rock Chalk Jayhawk” in unison as Price delivered an important message about the value of an education. Following the theme, Price and his players handed out over 200 care packages consisting of school supplies, water bottles and authentic KU apparel.

“I felt it was important for our players to see first-hand the educational system in another country,” Price said. “It was important for them to see that, but it was also important for those children to see us. It was a very humbling experience and I don’t want our guys to take anything for granted.”

The trip to the school was in conjunction with Baseball Cares, an initiative supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA). Its mission is to promote development activities in the Dominican Republic and demonstrate how baseball can effectively give back to the community.

The Jayhawks are back in action Friday, November 25 in split-squad action. One team will travel to the Philadelphia Phillies Baseball Academy, while the other half of the squad will head to the Kansas City Royals complex. Both games are slated for 10:30 a.m. local time (8:30 a.m. CT).
