Bishop Claims Back-to-Back CollegeSwimming.com Swimmer of the Week Awards

LAWRENCE, Kan. – After posting an unblemished performance during the Jayhawks final meet inside Robinson Natatorium for the 2015-16 season, freshman Haley Bishop earned CollegeSwimming.com’s Big 12 Swimmer of the Week for the second consecutive week.

Kansas capped its home schedule by running its consecutive home events win streak to 40 in a sweep of Nebraska-Omaha last Saturday, to which Bishop has contributed 10 wins, including all four of her events last weekend.

The Apex, North Carolina native helped trigger KU’s 15-event wins against the Mavericks, swimming anchor for the 200-yard medley relay (1:44.70). She then helped solidify another Jayhawk sweep by closing out the meet as leadoff for the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.06).

In-between relays, Bishop displayed her speed in the butterfly sprints. She won the 100-yard butterfly in 56.73, out-touching her competition by nearly two seconds. Later in the afternoon Bishop tallied another win in the 50-yard butterfly (25.81).

In addition to eight National Swimmers of the Week, 110 swimmers were selected by CollegeSwimming.com as Swimmers of the Week for their respective conferences. The selections are separate from official conference selections made by each league office.

The computer formula selected Bishop for the third time this season. KU’s Chelsie Miller is the only other Jayhawk to earn the award this year.

Kansas heads to Ames, Iowa for a two-day, championship-style meet against conference foe Iowa State. Races are scheduled to start at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb 5, and 10 a.m. on Saturday Feb. 6 inside Beyer Pool. The meet is KU’s final competition before the season culminates with the 2016 Big 12 Championship at Texas’ Jamail Swimming Center, Feb. 24-27.
