LAWRENCE, Kan.—Kansas came out on top of several back-and-forth battles in singles play to post a 4-1 win against Colorado Sunday afternoon in the Jayhawk Tennis Center. Kansas remains undefeated in 2016, as it improved to 6-0 on the season with the win over the Buffaloes. The loss dropped Colorado to 3-4 on the year.

“It was very competitive, there was a huge swing from the doubles to the singles,” Kansas head coach Todd Chapman said. “The doubles teams from Colorado did a great job responding and came out and really competed and made some things difficult on us. Every time we’ve been pushed as a team this season, they’ve found a way to win. Whether it’s them feeding off of each other out on the court and feeling the support of their teammates and their coaches, or if it’s their confidence taking over—they believe in the work that they put in to prepare for these situations and that’s probably what has made us successful.”

The match began with the Jayhawks quickly claiming the doubles point. On court three, freshman Anastasiya Rychagova and sophomore Smith Hinton swept their opponents, Colorado’s Alex Aiello and Brigette Beck, 6-0. Freshmen Janet Koch and Nina Khmelnitckaia were close behind on court one with a 6-2 victory over CU’s Tina Bokhua and Nuria Ormeno.

After quickly moving to 1-0 in the match following doubles play, Khmelnitckaia moved the Jayhawks to a 2-0 lead with her, 6-4, 7-6 (3), win over Andrinopoulos on court four. She was quickly followed by Koch who defeated Daniel, 7-6 (2), 6-4, on court three.

Colorado got on the board with Bokhua’s victory over Rychagova on court one. CU trailed Kansas 3-1 after her, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, win over the previously undefeated Rychagova.

With the Buffaloes making a push, KU’s Hinton sealed the win for the Jayhawks by battling back for a, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5), win over Ormeno. Hinton, who rallied back from two match points, provided the final score of 4-1 in favor of the Jayhawks.
