Three-Peat for Bishop with CollegeSwimming.com Award

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Don’t blame Haley Bishop, the computers seem to love winning just as much as she does. The Kansas freshman earned her third consecutive weekly honor from CollegeSwimming.com, garnering the organization’s Big 12 Swimmer of the Week award after closing her rookie regular-season finale with wins in four different races at Iowa State.

Bishop has gone nearly a month without losing a race as an individual, winning eight straight while also tallying five more wins as a key contributor to Kansas’ top relay teams over the last three meets. Even on the rare occurrence she’s not at the top of the podium, Bishop has been among KU’s top swimmers, leading the Jayhawks with four second-place, a third-place and two more top finishes in the team’s sluggish start to the New Year in Florida (Jan. 8-9).

CollegeSwimming.com has acknowledged Bishop’s continued success by naming her the Big 12 Swimmer of the Week for the third consecutive week. The honor is based off of weekly results submitted to CollegeSwimming.com each Monday, including the number of individual and relay event wins, the strength of each swim (using CollegeSwimming.com’s Point Values) and team outcome.

The Apex, North Carolina native has won 11 of her last 12 races, while tallying 26 total victories throughout the 2015-16 season. She has been a significant contributor to Kansas’ 9-4 dual record, helping the Jayhawks to back-to-back seasons with nine wins.

In Ames last weekend, Bishop turned in a dual-best mark in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.22 – finishing the dual season undefeated in the event and just short of her season-best time. She also claimed the 100-yard butterfly in 55.62. Bishop was one of three freshmen to register individual event wins in the Big 12 match-up.

Bishop assisted in both relay wins over the Cyclones, swimming anchor in the 200-yard medley relay (1:43.96) and leadoff in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:29.46).

The speedy Jayhawk ranks among the top-eight of the Big 12 Conference in five different individual events and is a contributing member of three relays ranked second and one ranked third among Big 12 squads headed into the league championship meet at the end of February.

In addition to eight National Swimmers of the Week, CollegeSwimming.com selected 35 swimmers as Swimmers of the Week for their respective conferences. The selections are separate from official conference selections made by each league office.

The Jayhawks will travel to Austin, Texas for the Big 12 Championships Feb. 24-27. The four-day event will take place in the Jamail Swimming Center.
