Rowing Captures Three Medals at Knecht Cup

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The University of Kansas rowing team brought home three medals on the final day of the Knecht Cup on Sunday at Mercer Lake in New Jersey, capping off one of the most successful weekends of the season to date.
Three KU boats made it to the Grand Finals of their respective races led by a first-place finish by the Second Varsity Four (2V4), while both the Second Varsity Eight (2V8) and Third Varsity Eight (3V8) notched second-place finishes.
“We were really pleased with the efforts of our boats that made the Grand Finals today,” said Kansas head coach Rob Catloth. “I think we performed very well, we raced really strong competitive races and we made some finals and won some medals, we came really close to our goal.”
After dealing with dreadful weather on Saturday, the clouds dissipated and sun managed to peak through on Sunday for Kansas’ strong finish to the weekend.
Kicking off the morning on Sunday, KU finished first in the Second Varsity Eight semifinal with a time if 7:07.40 automatically qualifying them for the Grand Final competition against Massachusetts, Boston College, Wisconsin LWT, Connecticut and Tulsa.
The Jayhawks’ 2V8 boat came out strong in the Grand Final, claiming a second-place finish in the event and the first of three Kansas medals on the day. Kansas crossed the finish line with a time of 6:49.0, nearly eighteen seconds quicker than its morning row, and only less than two seconds away from first-place UMass.
The First Varsity Eight was next in line and in their semifinal they finished third with a time of 6:51.26 placing them in the Petite Final.
A hard fought race in the Petite Final showed the Jayhawks placing third behind Old Dominion and Drexel with a time of 6:50.31.
In the Novice Eight competition the Jayhawks managed a fourth-place finish crossing the line with a time of 7:27.36 sending them to the Petite Final to compete against Delaware, Drexel, Old Dominion, Colgate and Duquesne.
In the Petite Final, Kansas finished second just behind Delaware to place second in the event with a time of 7:18.32.
Finishing up the morning semifinal sessions was the Third Varsity Eight who fought hard to a second-place finish with a time of 7:14.98, qualifying them for the Grand Final later the day.
Rowing hard to a second-place finish with a time of 7:08.47 the Third Varsity Eight cruised past competitors North Carolina, Boston College, Alabama and Miami, while only missing out on first place by two seconds to Bucknell.
Starting off the afternoon session was the Second Varsity Four, who was one of two Kansas boats that were able to get their semifinal races in on Saturday. They dominated the Grand Final race placing first with a time of 7:32.33, ten seconds before second-place finisher Bucknell and taking home the third medal for Kansas
The Jayhawks then competed in their Grand Final race for the Second Varsity Four, where KU finished in sixth-place putting up a time of 7:29.18.
Kansas will have the next weekend off from and will be traveling to Wisconsin for the Big 12 Big Ten double duel Saturday April, 23.
