Final Standings
Tuscaloosa, Ala. – In its first appearance in the postseason in nine years, the Kansas men’s golf team finished in sole possession of 10th-place at the NCAA Regional in Tuscaloosa, Alabama Wednesday. Shooting rounds of 308-301-305–914 (+50), the Jayhawks fell short of advancing to the NCAA Championship, marking the end to one of the most successful seasons in program history.
The five teams that advanced to the NCAA Championship from the Tuscaloosa Regional are Georgia (-16), South Carolina (-12), Alabama (-7), Kentucky (-6) and Auburn (+3). Despite not advancing, KU still led the 13-team field in pars recorded with 168 throughout the the three-day event at Ol’ Colony Golf Course.
“We just couldn’t get it going this week and it was a horrible week to play poorly,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “Overall, it was solid season and we improved in a lot of areas. I hope we can make it back next year to NCAA Regionals and do much better.”
For the fourth time in his final campaign as a Jayhawk, senior Connor Peck led the Jayhawks in scoring carding rounds of 74-73-73–221 (+5). By finishing the event in a tie for 30th, Peck completed the season with 12 top-30 finishes in the 13 tournaments he participated in. Peck was one shot shy of participating in a playoff for the final individual to advance to the NCAA Championship as there was a three-way tie for the sixth spot.
Behind Peck on the Kansas leaderboard was his senior classmate Ben Welle, whose 74 (+2) on Wednesday marked his best score of the NCAA Regional. His rounds of 75-80-74–229 (+13) gave him a tie for 54th.
After improving his score on the second day, freshman Charlie Hillier struggled to have a repeat performance in the third round, shooting an 8-over, 80. Throughout the three-round event, Hillier recorded scores of 81-73-80–234 (+18) and placed in a two-way tie for 63rd.
Sophomore Daniel Hudson finished off the event with his best regional score on Wednesday, with a 4-over, 77. His three-day total of 235 (+19) put him in a tie for 65th. Junior Chase Hanna rounds off the group of Jayhawks that represented Kansas at the NCAA Regional. His scores of 80-76-80–236 (+20) led him to a tie for 68th.
Kansas recorded four tournament victories and nine top-five finishes in 2015-16. Its NCAA Regional appearance was KU’s 18th in program history and its first as a team since 2007.
