EUGENE, Ore. – Kansas seniors Daina Levy and Dasha Tsema put the finishing touches on a solid week for the Kansas track & field teams Saturday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships inside Historic Hayward Field. Levy turned in a 16th-place finish to earn second team All-America honors, while Tsema claimed 19th overall.
Levy, competing in the NCAA Championship discus for the second-straight year, got her afternoon out to a strong start after she posted an opening attempt mark of 51.67 meters (169’6″). That toss immediately moved her into the top-five of the early standings. Tsema followed moments later, heaving the discus out to 51.47 meters (168’10”) on her opening toss. Both Jayhawks sat among the top-six of the leaderboard after the first round.
Levy upped her standing with an improvement on her next trip into the ring. The senior tallied a throw of 52.21 meters (171’3″), her third-best mark of 2016, to elevate her overall standing going into the final round.
The Mississuaga, Ontario native did not improve on her final attempt but still managed to claim a 16-place finish, a spot which earned her second team All-America honors in the event.
Unfortunately Tsema was unable to record a mark on her final two attempts of the competition, committing a foot foul on both throws and ending her day in 19th-place. That spot earned the senior honorable mention All-American status.
The Kansas women have now five Jayhawks attain first or second team All-America status in the discus.
With the collegiate track season now over, several Jayhawks will turn their attention to various national and world meets set to take place later this summer.
