Kansas’ Nonconference Slate Set for 2016-17

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas women’s basketball is set to begin its second season under head coach Brandon Schneider with another home-heavy nonconference slate, as announced Wednesday.

KU’s 2016-17 campaign will tipoff with two exhibition games and 11 nonconference contests before the Big 12 Conference season gets underway in late December. The Jayhawks’ nonconference schedule features 10 home games, including the pair of exhibition games.

“We’re looking forward to starting our second year at Kansas and getting back in the gym with our student-athletes,” said Schneider. “Now that the schedule has been announced, it means that our season is right around the corner and we have another challenging nonconference slate that will prepare us for what will be another great Big 12 Conference season.”

The Jayhawks first hit the hardwood with a pair of exhibition games against Fort Hays State (10/30) and Washburn (11/6). The two-game exhibition slate will provide Kansas with a tune up before the season opener against Missouri State (11/13). KU has faced Fort Hays State eight times in exhibition contests, while hosting Washburn six times inside Allen Fieldhouse for exhibition matchups.

Kansas hosts Missouri State for its 2016-17 season opener. KU will square off with the Bears for the first time since 2007, a 64-58 victory in Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks then face SMU for the third time in Allen Fieldhouse before playing their first game away from home. When meeting in Allen Fieldhouse, KU is 2-0 against the Mustangs.

For the first road trip of 2016-17, the Jayhawks will travel to Memphis (11/20) for their first visit to Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Although it’s Kansas’ first trip to Memphis, KU has a 4-0 all-time record against the Tigers. The series between the two programs began in 1979, however the teams have met three times in the last six seasons.

Following a quick road trip to Memphis, KU returns home to host Oral Roberts (11/23) and North Dakota (11/27). The Jayhawks won the first 12 meetings against Oral Roberts, while Kansas squares off with North Dakota for the first time. The game against the Fighting Hawks is the first of two first-time foes for Kansas.

The Jayhawks’ final road games prior to the start of conference action are back-to-back contests away from Allen Fieldhouse at Creighton (11/30) and at Alabama (12/4). Kansas has won 12 of the last 13 meetings against the Bluejays while KU will visit Tuscaloosa for the first time in program history.

Kanas closes out its nonconference slate with a four-game homestand before starting the 2017 Big 12 season. The Jayhawks will square off with Harvard (12/7) for the first time since 1987, just the second meeting between the two programs on the hardwood. Up next, KU will host Rhode Island (12/11) inside Allen Fieldhouse for the first meeting in Kansas women’s basketball history.

The homestand continues as the Jayhawks welcome Arizona (12/17) to Lawrence for the first time since 1999 and second trip overall before concluding the non-conference schedule with UC Riverside (12/21). The Highlanders’ visit to Allen Fieldhouse marks the third trip to Lawrence since 2007. 

The University of Kansas men’s and women’s basketball teams will tip off their 2016-17 seasons at the 32nd annual Late Night in the Phog presented by Hy-Vee Saturday, Oct. 1, in Allen Fieldhouse. Late Night in the Phog will run from 6:30 p.m. to approximately 9:30 p.m.

The event will feature recognition of KU’s unprecedented 12^th-straight Big 12 Championship, music by the KU pep band, skits by both basketball teams, video highlights from KU’s award-winning Rock Chalk Video department, coach and player introductions, scrimmages by the KU men’s and women’s teams and much more.
