Alex Moorman qualifies for U.S. Amateur

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas freshman men’s golfer Alex Moorman has qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship, Aug. 15-21, at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, just outside Detroit.
 
Moorman, who was a redshirt in 2015-16 at KU, shot a two-round 143 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny, Iowa, July 11 in the U.S. Amateur qualifier. The Centerville, Iowa, native finished in a three-way tie for third with the top two finishers – Dennis Bull (139) and Andrew Huseman (142) – earning automatic bids for the amateur championship. Moorman then won a three-way playoff to become the first alternate and Bull later withdrew from the U.S. Amateur, allowing Moorman to make the trip to Detroit.
 
More than 7,300 golfers entered qualifying tournaments for the 2016 U.S. Amateur. Moorman will be in the field of 312 compete in two 18-hole rounds of stroke play on Aug. 15 and 16, with the top 64 advancing to match-play competition Aug. 17-21.
