RCW: A look back 3.4

Rock Chalk Weekly takes a weekly look back into the archives of the Booth Hall of Athletics to deliver interesting artifacts and the fascinating stories behind them. Explore Kansas history and tradition inside this edition.

This week, let’s take A Look Back at the former student-athletes who presented the seven top honors announced at Sunday evening’s Rock Chalk Choice Awards in the Lied Center. Those seven categories: Jayhawker Award, Best Jayhawk in a Supporting Role, The Crimson Climb Award, True Blue Award, Rock Chalk Moment Award, and Male and Female Athlete of the Year, were handed out to the 2015-16 winners by past recipients of each award. Those presenters, along with their Kansas athletics career accomplishments, are highlighted below.

BRIANNE RILEY, Jayhawker Award
Volleyball | G’13

Career Highlights: 2,053 career digs (Kansas record). Three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection. Riley’s 2,053 digs rank her fourth in the all-time Big 12 record book.

ANTHONY DAVIS, Crimson Climb Award
Football | G’12

Career highlights: 54 tackles. Davis tallied multiple tackles in the 2008 Insight Bowl, five tackles in the final two games of the 2009 season and an interception against Baylor in 2011. He made two solo tackles in the team’s final game versus Missouri.

MICHAEL CUMMINGS, Best Jayhawk in a Supporting Role
FOOTBALL | G’16

Career highlights: Cummings ended the 2014 season with 2,357 yards of total offense. He also added nine passing touchdowns and four rushing touchdowns. He became an off-the-field leader after injury ended his playing career in 2015.

MADDIE STEIN, True Blue Award
Softball | G’15

Career highlights: Finished career in top-10 for RBIs (150, Kansas record), batting average (.349, T-4th), doubles (47, T-3rd), hits (219, T-4th), total bases (307, 6th) and slugging percentage (.490, 10th). Stein also represented Kansas and Big 12 student-athletes as a voting delegate at the 2015 NCAA Convention, among other community and academic honors.

MAGGIE HULL-TIETZ, All-American Recognition
Softball | G’13

Career highlights: Three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection, three-time All-Big 12 honoree. Two-time Academic All-American (2012, 2013). NFCA All-America Third Team in 2013. Finished career as Kansas RBI leader (140).

CANDACE (MASON) DUNBACK, Female Athlete of the Year
Track & Field | G’99

Career highlights: Five-time All-American in the heptathlon and pole vault, five-time Conference champion and an Academic All-American. Dunback set Big 12 and Kansas school records in the pole vault, pentathlon and heptathlon.

MICHAEL STIGLER, Male Athlete of the Year
Track & Field | G’15

Career highlights: Three-time Male Athlete of the Year selection. 2015 NCAA Champion in the 400-meter hurdles. The first Jayhawk in program history to earn First Team All-America honors in a single event in four-consecutive years. Also earned two Second Team All-America honors with the 4x400m relay.
