Chandra leads Jayhawks at Schooner Classic

NORMAN, Okla. – Kansas sophomore Victoria Chandra’s first round of the 2016-17 season proved to be her best as a Jayhawk, as she fired a career-best 70 and finished with a five-over-par 147 over two rounds Saturday at the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club.
 
With the threat of inclement weather in the forecast for Sunday, tournament officials opted to play the first two rounds Saturday, so like the rest of the field, the Jayhawks grinded through 36 holes instead of the originally scheduled 18.

As a team, KU finished the two rounds 30-over-par and posted a 598 on the day. The Jayhawks stand in 12^th place. Chandra’s 1-under par first round marked the brightest spot of the day, as she knocked in four birdies over the first 18 holes.  

“Vicky played very well in the morning 18 which was great to see,” head coach Erin O’Neil said.  “She was very focused in the first round and was taking care of the little details she needed to do to play her best golf. She has so much talent, and is a difference maker for us.” 

Both Pitsinee Winyarat and Ariadna Fonseca Diaz posted the Jayhawks’ second-best round of the day, after they each shot a two-over 73 during the first round. Winyarat followed with a 76 on the next 18 holes and stands in a tie for 39^th at 149.  Fonseca Diaz ranks tied for 43^rd with a 151 after shooting a 78 in her second round.

Junior Kallie Gonzales was able to shave six strokes off between her first and second round scores and stands in a tie for 50^th with a 154.  Freshman Annika Cedo also improved her score between the two rounds and carded four birdies on the day. She finished the day 13-over-par.

“As a team, we need to eliminate the big numbers which means not three-putting after being in trouble off the tee or missing a green, and making confident, committed swings,” O’Neil said. “We gave away too many shots because we were scared of what the wind was going to do to our ball.  We have to be tougher and smarter out there for us to move up the leaderboard.”

No. 17 Florida State leads the event at 19-under 549 and No. 6 Alabama is second with a 557 for 11-under.
 
Weather permitting, the third and final round is scheduled to start Sunday at 11 a.m.  However, if weather does come into play, the final round will be played Monday as originally scheduled.
