Men's golf finishes fourth at Maui Jim Intercollegiate

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz – Through windy conditions, Kansas looked to its veteran leadership on the final day of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, as senior Chase Hanna led the Jayhawks to a fourth-place finish on Sunday.  

“Solid event overall as this was a good field with 12 of the teams playing in the NCAA tournament last year,” head coach Jamie Bermel said. “I was disappointed after the second round and we talked last night in the team meeting about being tougher on the golf course today and hats off to the guys as they responded. The round we had today was very solid and it was quite windy for most of the round. Probably a 15-20 mph wind which did make a difference on a lot of shots.” 

As was the case all weekend, Hanna was able to stay consistent, recording a three-under-par, 68, in the final round Sunday afternoon, putting him at 10-under-par for the tournament and sixth in the event. He now has seven top-10 finishes in his career as a Jayhawk.  

Responding from challenges on Saturday, sophomore Charlie Hillier was able to finish the final day with a one-under-par, 70, putting him at three-under-par for the tournament and earning a tiefor 16th. This marks Hillier’s ninth top-20 finish of his career.  

“Chase had a very good week and Charlie was very solid as well,” Bermel said. “Both finished in the top 20 in a strong field.” 

An eagle on the par-five seventh was the highlight of junior Daniel Hudson’s round, who recorded a 70 on the final day. Hudson finished one-over-par for the tournament, resulting in a tie for 34th.  

Junior Daniel Sutton’s final day had a rough start, recording four-straight bogeys. Luckily, Sutton was able to collect a couple of birdies to finish the day with a three-over-par, 74. He finished three-over-par for the tournament and ended up tied for 40th. 

Freshman Andy Spencer was able to post his best round of the event, finishing at even par on the day with a 71. As a result, Spencer ended up five-over-par for the tournament putting him tied for 48th place.  

Alex Moorman, playing as an individual, had an exciting day, as he recorded his first hole-in-one, and first in event history, on the par-three eighth. In his first collegiate event, Moorman finished tied for 28th at even par.  

“I’m happy for Alex,” Bermel said. “This was his first college event as a redshirt freshman and had a good week and one he will probably never forget. Alex made his first career hole-in-one and shot 72, with a triple on his first hole.” 

Kansas finished 26 strokes behind tournament champion No. 7 LSU. The Jayhawks were able to edge out T-11 Cal by 21 strokes, No. 17 South Carolina by two strokes, and No. 22 South Florida by 24 strokes.  

Next, the Jayhawks will travel to Burlington, Iowa to compete in the Golfweek Conference Challenge which will take place September 30 – October 2.
