NORMAN, Okla. – Kallie Gonzales carded a career-best round to close out the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club Sunday which helped the Kansas women’s golf team post its best round of the event and move up a spot on the final day.
Gonzales got off to a great start with birdies on three of her first four holes. The Kansas junior used that momentum to finish with a one-over-par 72, topping her best round by a stroke. Gonzales finished the event with a 226 and tied for 49th.
“Kallie played very well (Sunday),” said head coach Erin O’Neil. “She did a great job staying mentally tough and letting go of bad shots. I’m very proud of the progress she has made with her game.”
The Jayhawks finished the third round at 10-over and were able to jump Mississippi State by two strokes to finish in 11th place overall.
“The course played completely different from (Saturday),” said O’Neil. “We did a better job of making adjustments throughout the day and finished strong on our last few holes.”
Junior Pitsinee Winyarat ended her final round with birdies on two of the last four holes. As a result, she was able to equal her first round score with a two-over 73. Winyarat was KU’s top individual finisher tying for 37th with a 222. Ariadna Fonseca Diaz was one-under at the turn, but a triple bogey on her 10th hole put her on the plus-side for good. She finished with a three-over 74 and tied for 45th overall.”
Freshman Annika Cedo notched her best round of the event with a four-over 75. She was plus-three on the front nine, but played even par on her back nine with the exception of one bogey. Victoria Chandra, who scored the best KU round of the event in the first round, had her round scratched after carding a 79. She ended the event tied for 49th.
“As a group we are very willing to learn, which is a huge asset,” O’Neil said. “We have a few weeks in between tournaments to continue to fine tune our games and be even more prepared for our next event in Louisville.”
The Jayhawks will have nearly four weeks off and will return to competition on October 23 when they travel to the University of Louisville Cardinal Cup.
