KU softball to dedicate fall game to #TeamCole

LAWRENCE, Kan. – One of the most meaningful days on the diamond for Kansas softball comes each spring when hosting its annual ‘Jayhawks for a Cure’ game when KU plays for something bigger than itself. The Jayhawks are raising awareness a little earlier than normal for a cause that is close to the heart, as KU takes the field in support of childhood cancer and Cole Hayden on Saturday, Oct. 1.

Much like the Kansas football team did earlier in the month, KU softball is supporting Hayden, son of Assistant Athletics Director – Academic and Career Counseling Shanda Hayden, by dedicating one of its eight fall games.

Hayden is currently undergoing chemotherapy in his battle against undifferentiated sarcoma, which is described as malignant neoplasm of uncertain origin that arises both in soft tissue and bone.

“Even though Shanda doesn’t work directly with our team, she is still a part of our family – the Jayhawk family,” said head coach Megan Smith. “When anyone is going through hard times we want to reach out and show support. We care a lot about her and her family and want them to know that we are in their corner, praying for him and cheering him along during his fight.”

The Jayhawks will compete in special #TeamCole shirts in honor of Hayden and the fight against childhood cancer. Raising awareness for childhood cancer and Hayden is one of many ways that Kansas softball stands with its Jayhawk family, something that is important to all that touch the program.

#TeamCole wristbands and t-shirts supporting Cole Hayden and the fight against childhood cancer are available by emailing teamcolehayden@gmail.com.
