Jackson named Big 12 co-Newcomer of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Kansas freshman guard Josh Jackson was named the co-Big 12 Newcomer of the Week in a vote by a media panel which covers the league, the conference announced Monday. This is the second-straight week and fourth time Jackson has earned the accolade in 2016-17.

In Kansas victories at Oklahoma, 81-70 on Jan. 10, and against Oklahoma State, 87-80 on Jan. 14, Jackson averaged 18.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals. The Detroit, Michigan, native opened the week scoring 16 points with four rebounds and three assists at Oklahoma. Jackson then notched his fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds against Oklahoma State. He also had two blocked shots and four steals against the Cowboys.

Jackson’s double-double against OSU was his fourth of the season and second in Big 12 play. He has four games of 20 or more points this season, including two against conference foes.

Historically, Jackson’s four Big 12 Newcomer of the Week recognitions ties Tyshawn Taylor in 2010-11 for the most by a Jayhawk. On Dec. 27, 2016, Jackson was named the Big 12 Player of the Week and he joined former KU players Ben McLemore (2012-13) and Mario Chalmers (2005-06) in earning both league player and newcomer honors in the same season.

Jackson shared co-Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors with Texas freshman Jarrett Allen.
