RCW: Donor Spotlight - Barb McHugh
A true-blue Jayhawk, Barb McHugh proudly supports her alma mater while residing in Columbia, Missouri, or “enemy territory,” as she calls it. In addition to being a season ticket holder for both football and men’s basketball, McHugh has been giving to all Kansas student-athletes through her Williams Education Fund donations since 1997. Get to know Barb McHugh a little more in this edition of the WEF Donor Spotlight.
Are you University of Kansas alumni?
Yes, I’m a proud alum with a degree from the School of Education.
What is your favorite Kansas Athletics memory?
Although I will never forget our magnificent, come-from-behind 2008 national championship win, my favorite Allen Fieldhouse memory is our overtime win against MU in 2012 as they were sprinting out the door to get to the SEC! The Fieldhouse has never been that loud!
Why do you support Kansas Athletics and its student-athletes?
In large part, athletic programs can become the face of a university. Donations to Kansas Athletics allow us to maintain and showcase our unparalleled basketball tradition, support our football program and advance our footprint in sports across the board. It is through this venue that people everywhere are introduced to the glory and excellence that define KU.
What is your favorite KU tradition?
I have two favorite traditions. One is the Rock Chalk Chant after a basketball victory and the other is “waving the wheat” after scoring touchdowns.
If you could describe KU in one word, what word would it be and why?
KU is timeless. It has been, and will continue to be, the flagship university of our state and will continue to provide academic opportunities, life lessons, fraternity and fellowship for future generations of Jayhawks everywhere.
Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?
I have been a hostage resident of Columbia, Missouri, for more than two decades. However, the close proximity to Lawrence does allow me to enjoy my KU football and basketball season tickets. And, as a member of the Williams Education Fund, I continue to vigorously lobby for “hazardous-duty points” for living behind enemy lines and for valor above and beyond.
