Josh Jackson named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for the third time

IRVING, Texas – Kansas freshman guard Josh Jackson has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Newcomer of the Week in a vote by a media panel which covers the league, the conference announced Monday. This is the third time this season Jackson has earned the honor.

In two Kansas victories over Kansas State and Texas Tech last week, Jackson averaged 19.5 points and 9.5 rebounds. The Detroit, Michigan, native opened the week scoring 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting with nine rebounds, six assists, one blocked shot and one steal in the win against Kansas State. His 22 points marked the third time this season he has scored 21 or more for a game.

In the win against Texas Tech, Jackson recorded his third double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. He also had three blocked shots and two steals against the Red Raiders.

Jackson is second on the team with a 15.3 scoring average, which is sixth in the Big 12, and leads KU with 22 blocked shots. His 1.5 blocks per game are tied for eighth in the league. He is tied for the team lead with 23 steals and his 1.5 steals per game are tied for ninth in the conference.

Earlier this season Jackson was named the Big 12 Player of the Week and in doing so became only the third Jayhawk to be named player and newcomer by the league in the same season. Ben McLemore in 2012-13 and Mario Chalmers in 2005-06 also earned both weekly honors in the same year. The KU season record for Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors is four by Tyshawn Taylor in 2008-09.

No. 3/2 Kansas (14-1, 3-0) will play at Oklahoma (6-8, 0-3) on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 8 p.m. on ESPN2.
