Six Jayhawks earn NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Six Kansas softball student-athletes earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2016-17 academic year. KU’s honorees include Erin McGinley, Sarah Miller, Becki Monaghan, Emily Bermel, Lily Valeo and Sophia Templin.

The NFCA honored a record 1,843 NCAA Division I softball student-athletes this week who earned a 3.5 grade-point average or higher.

Templin, a spring 2017 graduate, is also a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree. During her senior season she made 12 relief outings in the circle, recording a 1-0 record with 11 strikeouts.

McGinley started all 52 games in centerfield for the Jayhawks during her junior season in 2017, earning NFCA All-Region Second Team and Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors. She led KU with a .337 batting average and 57 hits.

Miller made 12 starts and 19 appearances in the circle for the Jayhawks during her junior season in 2017. She posted a 3.94 ERA and totaled 40 strikeouts.

Monaghan appeared made 47 starts during her debut season as a freshman in 2017. The Stony Plain, Alberta, native hit .261 with 31 hits.
