WICHITA, Kan. – Kansas sophomore Anastasia Rychagova earned her seventh singles win over a ranked opponent this season as the Jayhawks defeated Wichita State, 5-2, at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
No. 50 Rychagova topped the Shockers’ No. 113-ranked Giulia Guidetti, 6-3, 6-1, and improved to 7-2 against ranked opponents this season. Rychagova has now won eight of her last nine singles matches and owns a 19-5 overall record.
With doubles pairs switching up, Rychagova paired with Maria Toran Ribes for the first time this season to defeat Tanaporn Thongsing and Ting-Ya Hsu, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot. The No. 19-ranked pair of Nina Khmelnitckaia and Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum won their match against Gabriela Porubin and Fatima Bizhukova, 6-1, to give Kansas the doubles point.
“(Friday) was a solid team win against a good Wichita State team,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “I thought we played with good energy throughout the match and competed well as a team.”
Moving up to the No. 2 singles spot, Bernard-Feigenbaum topped Porubin in a three-set match, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Also defeating her opponent in a three-set match, Toran Ribes won against Marta Bellucco, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, at the No. 5 spot. Playing at No. 6 singles, Tatiana Nikolaeva downed Hsu, 6-3, 6-2, marking a three-match win streak.
Khmelnitckaia wasn’t able to top Wichita State’s Thongsing, dropping the match, 6-3, 6-4. Janet Koch won the first set and battled in the second, but fell short against Bizhukova, 6-3, 5-7, 1-6.
“We will take a couple days off and prepare for a tough weekend next week in Las Vegas,” said Chapman.
Kansas will travel to Las Vegas next weekend. The Jayhawks will face UNLV Friday, February 24 and Tennessee on Saturday, February 25. Both matches are slated for 10 a.m., CT.
