LAWRENCE, Kan. – Sophomore Janet Koch notched a pair of wins to propel No. 21 Kansas to its fourth-straight win with a 4-0 victory over Iowa State Sunday on the outdoor courts at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
Paired with freshman Tatiana Nikolaeva on court two, the duo defeated Annabella Bonadonna and Margarita Timakova, 6-2, to put Kansas (11-4, 3-1) up 1-0 over the Cyclones (15-4, 1-2). In singles, Koch faced Regina Espindola at the No. 3 spot and won, 6-3, 6-3.
“Janet has been gradually playing better and better,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “She just hasn’t been able to finish a couple (matches). It’s something she’s been working at and working through. It’s good to see her get the clinching win.”
Sophomore Anastasia Rychagova and freshman Maria Toran Ribes earned their eighth-straight doubles win by downing Espindola and Erin Freeman, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot. Toran Ribes was the first to finish her singles match, topping Timakova, 7-5, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot.
“I thought it was a good competitive effort,” said Chapman. “We didn’t go away on any courts. We got off to good starts and converted in those situations. Iowa State pushed us in some second sets, but we were responding well and that’s always good to see.”
No. 122-ranked Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum won her seventh-consecutive match after downing Maty Cancini, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot. The senior improved to 12-3 in dual play and 21-7 overall.
Next, Kansas will hit the road for two away matches against Oklahoma at 5 p.m., Friday, April 7 and Oklahoma State at 1 p.m., Sunday, April 9.
