TULSA, Okla.- The Kansas women’s golf team finished fifth Dale McNamara Invitational Tuesday in the final regular season tournament of the 2016-17 campaign.
Kansas’ top golfer, Ariadna Fonseca Diaz, finished the event in a tie for third place, her second top-five finish of the season. She carded an 8-over 78 to end the event at 9-over.
“Ari is very close to breaking through and winning (a tournament),” head coach Erin O’Neil said. “The last couple tournaments have been a great experience for her to learn what she needs to do to push through and get the win.”
Victoria Chandra, who in the third round fired two birdies, a team-high for the day, finished tied for 14th.
KU individual competitor Xinyun Yu fired her first eagle of her young Jayhawk career in the third round on the 12th hole. Yu finished the three-round event at 18-over and in a tie for 20th place.
Following day one where juniors Kallie Gonzales and Pitsinee Winyarat finished in a tie for 33rd place, the pair remained in the same position by the end of round three, finishing 24-over in a tie for 33rd place.
A stroke behind Gonzales and Winyarat finished another pair of Jayhawks, sophomore Chomchana Phuchanbanchob and freshman Yi-Tsen Chou, who both carded three-round 25-overs to tie for 38th place.
Over the course of the two-day event, Kansas finished 67-over. The Jayhawk golfers fired a collective 19 birdies.
Host Tulsa (+41) won the Dale McNamara Invitational, followed by New Mexico State (+46), BYU (+53) and Fresno State (+60).
“We have to be more disciplined on and off the course and take care of things that we should be,” O’Neil said. “We have a week to regroup and refocus before the conference tournament.”
Postseason play begins for the Jayhawks when they travel to San Antonio, Texas to compete in the Big 12 Championship April 21-23.
