Kansas downs Iowa, 1-0, in spring friendly

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Jayhawk soccer team got its second win of the spring exhibition season as it shutout the Iowa Hawkeyes Saturday afternoon, 1-0. Freshman Katie McClure knocked in the lone goal of the match and was assisted by fellow freshman Sophie Maierhofer.

“We played very well today,” said head coach Mark Francis. “We were flat in our match last week and I think we were able to get back on track with this outing today. We had a lot more energy. We had sequences where we moved the ball well and created really good opportunities. There were a lot of positives in this one.”

McClure knocked in her second goal of the spring with the help of Maierhofer in the 18th minute. The early goal proved to be enough as the Jayhawk defense shut down the Hawkeye offense the rest of the way, posting KU’s first shutout of the spring.

“The backs did a good job,” Francis said. “Their shape was good and they stayed patient when Iowa was on the attack. We also did a good job challenging balls in the box which we have been working on over the last few weeks.”

The Jayhawks will return to Lawrence to close out the spring campaign when they host the UMKC Kangaroos on Saturday, April 29. Kickoff from Rock Chalk Park is set for 7 p.m.

“We have four more training sessions and the game next Saturday to end the season well. Today was a good springboard; hopefully we can continue what we started this week and end the spring on a high note.”
