Kansas rowing’s first-place finishes lead to success at Mason Invite

FAIRFAX, Va. – Paced by first-place finishes for the First Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight boats, Kansas rowing captured the team trophy and led the Big 12 to hoist the conference trophy in the three-league Mason Invite on the Occoquan Reservoir in Virginia on Sunday.

“The team really performed how we had hoped this weekend,” head coach Rob Catloth said. “We are very excited about where we are at after today’s races. Our confidence is up and we are going to use that confidence to keep rowing at a high level going into the next two regattas.”

Rounding out the day with seven victories in the finals, the Big 12 Conference dominated the Colonial Athletic Association and Atlantic 10 with 52 total points to claim the scoring title. The A-10 placed second with 30 points and the CAA came in third with 26 points.

In the morning session, KU swept all head-to-head races against Big 12 foes West Virginia and Old Dominion. In the afternoon, the Jayhawks teamed up with the Mountaineers and Monarchs to win the Mason Invite conference trophy.

The morning session began with the First Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and First Varsity Four races. The Jayhawks recorded three first-place finishes against conference competitors West Virginia and Old Dominion, with times of 06:39.6, 06:52.9 and 07:37.5, respectively.

Closing out the morning session, the Third Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four added two more first-place victories. With five first-place finishes, Kansas moved on to compete against in each A Final race for the afternoon.

Kicking off the afternoon finals session, the Jayhawks raced the First Varsity Eight to another first-place finish pulling ahead of George Washington by just four seconds to add nine points to the Big 12 Conference score.

Kansas continued to build momentum in the afternoon, recording a first-place finish in the Second Varsity Eight race finishing just a second before George Washington.

The Jayhawks will come home to Kansas to host the Sunflower Showdown against K-State Saturday, April 29, on the Wyandotte County Lake.
