WACO, Texas – The No. 27 Kansas women’s tennis team battled hard against No. 18-ranked Baylor, but wasn’t able to rally in singles, falling to the Bears, 4-0, at the Hurd Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
The sophomore doubles pair of Anastasia Rychagova and Janet Koch got off to a quick start in the match by blanking Angie Shakhraichuk and Jessica Hinojosa, 6-0, at the No. 2 spot. The duo has now won three-consecutive matches and improved their overall record to 13-7.
“Credit to Baylor,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “They were just too good (Sunday). We will look to regroup and prepare for the Big 12 Championship next week.”
After a back-and-forth match at the No. 1 spot, the No. 30-ranked duo of Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and Nina Khmelnitckaia weren’t able to top the Bear’s team of Blair Shankle and Katrina Traxler, dropping the match, 7-5.
After winning the doubles point and a Kansas forfeit at No. 6 singles, Baylor went up 2-0. No. 74-ranked Rychagova couldn’t overcome No. 5 Shankle at the No. 1 spot, falling in the match, 6-3, 6-4. Bernard-Feigenbaum fought hard in her second set, but her rally fell short at the No. 2 spot, dropping the match, 6-1, 7-5.
The Jayhawks will return to Lawrence before they head to Norman for the Big 12 Championship where they will be the No. 7 seed and play No. 10 West Virginia at 1 p.m., Thursday, at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Okla.
