KU’s First Varsity Eight named Big 12 Boat of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Kansas rowing’s First Varsity Eight was named the Big 12 Boat of the Week on Thursday for their outstanding performance at the Mason Invite last weekend. It is the first Boat of the Week honor for Kansas after taking home two last season.

The Jayhawks’ top boat, coxswained by senior Mallory Miller, recorded the two fastest First Varsity Eight times at the Mason Invite last Sunday on the Occoquan Reservoir in Virginia. Their efforts lifted the Big 12 to capture the Mason Invite trophy. The invite was a three-conference competition, tallying points based on conference affiliation. Kansas also led all nine schools in total points.

KU’s 1V8+ defeated Big 12 contenders Old Dominion and West Virginia by more than eight seconds in the qualifying race, followed by edging George Washington and Delaware in the 1V8+ finals with a time of 6:32.200.

Rowers in the First Varsity Eight include sophomore McKayla Ross, junior BriAnna Dittberner, senior Katherine Young, senior Maddie Irelan, junior Kaelyn Thierolf, senior Allison Schaaf, senior Jordan Helms, and sophomore Meghan Karoly.

The Jayhawks return to the water tomorrow evening for the Dillons Sunflower Showdown against K-State at 5:45 from the Kansas Rowing Boathouse on the Kansas River.
