OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The University of Kansas rowing team was edged by Oklahoma and No. 5 Texas in the Big 12 Double Dual on Saturday on the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City.

“The competition was pretty good today with Texas and Oklahoma, but the weather was terrible,” Kansas head coach Rob Catloth said. “Our week of preparation wasn’t ideal as we had limited boat time on the water and worked through a few injuries, but some of our boats did very well considering the conditions.”

Wind gusts on the surface of the Oklahoma River reached up to 20 to 30 mph, resulting in times finishing about a minute slower than the normal pace.

Kansas’ Second Varsity Eight highlighted the day on the water, finishing just five seconds behind its Oklahoma counterpart in the first session, and clocking the second-best time of all four Varsity Eight boats in the second session. K-State was the fourth team competing on Saturday, but did race head-to-head against KU.

KU’s week of practice was slowed due to the heavy rain in Lawrence in the recent days, causing the Jayhawks’ practice course on the Kansas River to be unsafe to row on during the week of preparation due to high waters and threatening river currents.

“We made position strides today,” Catloth concluded. “Given all the external factors involved this week, we can learn a lot from seeing our conference’s competition as we work toward the Big 12 Championship regatta in May.”
