KU duo heads to Athens for NCAA Doubles Championship

2017 NCAA Women’s Tennis Doubles Tournament Bracket

LAWRENCE, Kan. – After earning an at-large berth in early May, Kansas’ No. 1 doubles team of senior Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and sophomore Nina Khmelnitckaia will begin bracket play in the Division I Women’s Tennis Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia on May 25.

Bernard-Feigenbaum and Khmelnitckaia are currently the No. 37-ranked doubles team in the nation. The duo climbed as high as No. 19 on February 8. Together, they won five-straight matches at the ITA Central Regional before falling in the title match. This season, the pair has tallied a 21-10 overall record, including a 15-7 spring mark.

“I am excited for Tess and Nina to have this opportunity and to participate in such a prestigious event,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “I know they are looking forward to see how they measure up against the best teams in the country. It is a great way for Tess to finish her career and a nice opportunity for Nina to gain great experience as just a sophomore.”

The Kansas duo will face the No. 2-ranked doubles team of Jasmine Lee and Lisa Marie Rioux of Mississippi State. The MSU pair owns a 24-5 overall mark, including going 16-4 in dual play and 8-3 against SEC opponents.

With the invite, Bernard-Feigenbaum and Khmelnitckaia are the third Jayhawk doubles team to participate in the national doubles tournament and the first since 1998, when Kylie Hunt and Christie Sim posted a 1-1 record at the event. In 1994, the Rebecca Jensen and Nora Koves rattled off four-straight wins to claim the national championship, after falling in the quarterfinals of the 1993 event.

The 32 doubles teams will begin play on May 25 with the championship match scheduled for May 29 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

All matches shall be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.
