Khmelnitckaia sweeps Jayhawk Adult Open

TOPEKA, Kan. – Kansas junior Nina Khmelnitckaia claimed both the women’s open singles and doubles titles at the 78th annual Jayhawk Adult Open at the Kossover Tennis Center, Sunday. Khmelnitckaia teamed with Jayhawk freshman Amber Policare for the doubles championship.

The last two rounds of singles play definitely had a KU feel, as Khmelnitckaia topped Policare, 6-0, 6-0, in the semifinals. With the win, Khmelnitckaia faced off against the other semifinalist victor, former doubles partner Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum for the championship. Days away from pairing together at the NCAA Doubles Championship, Khmelnitckaia got the best of the recent KU graduate with a 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 victory.

On the doubles court, Khmelnitckaia and Policare won the title with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 win over Alex Czapinski and Logan Morrissey.

“I am proud of Nina, Tess and Amber for competing this weekend,” said KU assistant coach Caroline Lilley. “Every tournament they play is another opportunity to improve and take ownership of their games.  Improvement is a daily commitment to preparing the right way and then going out in competition to diversify your arsenal of tools under pressure.

“They have so much grit and determination to improve and play this summer which is a testament to the culture (head coach) Todd (Chapman) has built here and has allowed me to be a part of.  We could not be happier about how hard the girls are working to be the best they can be, absolutely a pleasure to be along for the journey.”
