Stigler’s run caps strong weekend for Jayhawks at U.S. Championships
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A pair of Jayhawk alumni earned spots on Team USA for the World Championships over the weekend as a host of current and former members of the Kansas track & field team competed at the U.S. Championships inside Hornets Stadium.
Michael Stigler (center) claimed second in the 400m hurdles.A former Kansas standout, Michael Stigler, ran to a spot on Team USA for the World Championships with a runner-up finish in the 400-meter hurdles. Stigler, who was a four-time First Team All-American for the Jayhawks from 2012-15, came from behind over the final 100 meters to snare second in the 400-meter final Sunday afternoon, clocking in at 48.26. The finish earned Stigler an automatic spot on Team USA for the IAAF World Championships to be held in London, August 5-13.
Mason Finley will join Stigler in London for the World meet later this summer after defending his American discus title on Saturday morning. Finley, who spent three seasons with the Jayhawks from 2010-12, was coming off a stellar 2016 that saw him win his first U.S. title in the discus at the American Olympic Trials, before posting an 11th-place finish in the event at the Olympic Games in Rio. Saturday Mason cruised to another win by way of a throw of 63.03 meters (206-9). The victory earned Finley a spot with Team USA for the World Championships later this summer.
A third Jayhawk alumnus left Sacramento with hardware over the weekend as Andrea Geubelle collected bronze in the triple jump. Geubelle was a three-time NCAA Champion for the Jayhawks from 2010-13 and last year competed for the U.S. in the Olympic Games. For the second-straight year, Geubelle leaped to a third-place finish in triple jump, hitting a top mark of 13.62 meters (44-8¼). She will now have a month to attempt to get the qualification standard in order to compete for Team USA at the World meet.
Other Jayhawks to compete in the senior meet over the weekend included senior Jake Albright, who posted a 10th-place finish in the pole vault after clearing 5.40 meters (17-8½); junior Barden Adams, who turned in a 13th-place effort with his top mark of 15.72 meters (51-7); and sophomore Shaylyn Stallbaumer, who threw to a 17th-place finish in the javelin with her toss of 42.06 meters (138-0). Senior Sydney Conley was also in action, competing in the long jump; however, she failed to record a mark after fouling on all three of her attempts.
The U.S. Junior Championships also took place inside Hornet Stadium over the weekend with six Jayhawks in action. Freshman Andrea Willis was the highest finisher of the group after she snared bronze in the pole vault by way of a clearance of 3.90 meters (12-9½).
