INDIANAPOLIS – Competing against some of the best swimmers in the United States, incoming Kansas swimming & diving freshman Lauryn Parrish took advantage of the big stage at the 2017 Phillips 66 National Championships. The Fishers, Indiana native posted a personal record in the 100-meter freestyle at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Swimming in the second heat of the long course meter event, Parrish was the sixth to make the turn in her race, clocking a 27.99 50-meter time, and stayed in that position to finish sixth in the heat with her new best time of 57.92, which was good for 94th-overall in the event.

Louisville junior Mallory Comerford broke the U.S. National Championships meet record in the event by clocking in at a blazing 53.26. Gold medalist in the 100 free at the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro, Simone Manuel, who will be a senior at Stanford in the upcoming school year, finished with the second-fastest time in Tuesday’s prelim at 53.50. Stanford sophomore Katie Ledecky, who also made a name for herself at the 2016 Olympic Games by winning four gold medals and a silver, qualified for finals with a sixth-place finish.

Parrish will join fellow Jayhawk Jenny Nusbaum in the pool to kick off Wednesday’s prelims in the 200-meter freestyle at 8 a.m. CDT. Nusbaum finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle, her marquee event, at the 2017 Big 12 Championship to earn All-Big 12 Second Team honors.

Parrish will also compete in her signature event, the 200-meter backstroke, on Wednesday, which is slated to start at 10:08 a.m. CDT.
