Fans enjoyed morning on the water at Learn to Row

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas rowing teamed up with Lawrence Parks and Recreation to bring members of the community a fun and interactive day of learning all the ins-and-outs of rowing. Learn to Row has been a tradition on the Kansas River since the KU Boathouse opened in 2009.

“It’s great to be able to share our sport with the local community,” interim head coach Carrie Callen-Cook said, “We were grateful for such a beautiful day and excited participants who showed up ready to learn about the joys of rowing.”

The roles were reversed today, as the experienced Jayhawk rowers became the coaches. Friends and family started the morning with on land training, learning fundamentals on the rowing machines, ergometers, in their state-of-the-art facility. Fans quickly realized how difficult rowing can be.

After everyone learned the correct rowing form, the clinic moved downstairs and hopped into the swingulator for their last stage of training.

Following time on the swingulator, fans were ready to hit the water. Each boat was comprised of a combination of Learn to Row participants and experienced members of the Kansas rowing team. The team assisted in taking participants up and down the river.

The fans were able to put their knew skills to the test when a friendly race broke out between the boats. Of the four boats, In’cognita came out on top, which ended the fun-filled morning at Burcham Park.

Kansas rowing will be back on the water for its annual Jayhawk Jamboree October 22.
