SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Senior Daniel Sutton and sophomore Andy Spencer paved the way with a 1-under 71 for the Kansas men’s golf team during the second round of the Maui Jim Invitational. The Desert Forest Golf Club once again showed its toughness for the field, as the top seven teams saw heavy changes in the leaderboard. Entering Sunday’s final round, the Jayhawks currently sit at seventh-place at 8-over.

Sutton continues to face the challenging course with maturity and calmness. After relinquishing two bogeys in a four-hole stretch on the front nine, he kicked it into gear on the back, tallying his first eagle of the season on hole No. 2 (his 11th hole) to bring his score on the day back to even. Thanks to a birdie on his second-to-last hole on the day, his round-total dropped to 1-under, placing him at seventh on the leaderboard.

“This is the perfect course for him,” said Jayhawk head coach, Jamie Bermel. “It requires accuracy off the tee and that’s what he does.”

For Spencer, his 1-under 71 came by way of four birdies on the round. He managed to pick up steam right before the turn as two of his birdies came in the last four holes of his front nine. The solid outing has placed the sophomore at a tie for 17th-place on the individual leaderboard.

Senior Daniel Hudson ended the day with a 1-over 73. The LaGrange, Illinois native flirted around even-par the entire round, but ultimately surrendered a pair of late-bogeys that made him finish just above par. His round was highlighted by a string of three straight birdies to close out his front nine.

Junior Charlie Hillier recorded a 5-over 77 on the day, dropping him to a tie for 28th-place on the individual leaderboard. Should he sneak into the top-20 following tomorrow’s round, it would be his 12th-career finish in the top-20.

Junior Jake Scarrow wrapped up the round for the Jayhawks. Despite a 7-over 79, he was able to mark four birdies on his scorecard on the day, which was tied for the most on the team. Two of which came in a three-hole span.

Freshman Ben Sigel was able to make the most of his individual performance, as he shot a 2-under 70, by way of a 1-under 35 on both the front and the back.

“He’s really getting more and more comfortable with college golf,” added Bermel.

At seventh-place on the leaderboard, the Jayhawks are just two strokes behind Minnesota, and four strokes out from a place in the top-five.

“We need all guys playing well on Sunday because the leaderboard is fairly bunched up,” said Bermel. “If we can get something under par, we have the chance to finish well.”

The final round begins Sunday at 9 a.m. CT, with Scarrow representing the crimson and blue in the opening group. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
