Kansas finishes seventh at Maui Jim Intercollegiate

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Thanks to top-20 finishes from senior Daniel Sutton and sophomore Andy Spencer, the Kansas men’s golf team will head back to Lawrence with a seventh-place team finish at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate. The Jayhawks posted a 3-over in Sunday’s final round, bringing their tournament total to 11-over.
“The course played as easy as it could play (Sunday) with hardly any wind,” said Jayhawk head coach, Jamie Bermel. “We played fairly well but made some careless mistakes on our last nine holes.”
Junior Charlie Hillier led the Jayhawks on the day, shooting even-par 72. His first nine holes were plagued by a double bogey, but the New Zealand native later bounced with two birdies in his final five holes to even his score out. Hillier finished tied for 29th in the tournament.
Behind Hillier, a trio of Jayhawks scored a 1-over 73. Junior Jake Scarrow’s scorecard featured a pair of birdies on his first nine holes, putting him under-par before the turn. Three bogeys brought his score back over-par on the day, but his 1-under 73 was his lowest round of the tournament.
Sutton continued to impress during his final round. His 1-over 73 was highlighted by his eagle-par-birdie finish on the last three holes of his front nine. His 54-hole total of 216 was the best on the team, and found him at a tie for 12th-place on the individual leaderboard.
Spencer’s 1-over 73 featured four birdies on the front nine. Despite his five bogies, Spencer’s tournament-long consistency resulted in a tie for 18th-place.
“Dan and Andy played solid again this week, which is great to see” added Bermel.
Lastly, senior Daniel Hudson finished with a 3-over 75 on the day. The mark was his second-best of the tournament, and placed him a lone stroke behind Scarrow on the individual leaderboard.
Freshman Ben Sigel’s impressive individual tournament was capped off by an even-par 72. He recorded three birdies in his final four holes on the front nine, and later picked up another to tie Spencer for most Jayhawk birdies on the day. Sigel’s 54-hole total of 221 was the second best total amongst individual golfers in the field, and just one stroke shy of Georgia Tech’s Jacob Joiner.
Arizona State took home the 2017 Maui Jim Intercollegiate title with an impressive 7-under performance over the course of the tournament. As for the Jayhawks, they will now shift their focus to October 1, for day one of The Jackrabbit at The Prairie Club in Valentine, Nebraska.
“We need to clean up the careless mistakes in order to turn average rounds into good rounds,” said Bermel.
The Jackrabbit will consist of 14 teams, including Kansas. The tournament runs from October 1-3 with live scoring once again be available at Golfstat.com.
