Koch wins Flight 1 Singles at Rice Invitational

HOUSTON – Kansas junior Janet Koch was named champion of Flight 1 Singles Sunday at the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
 
Winning her third-straight match of the weekend, Koch faced and defeated Houston’s Tsveta Dimitrova, 6-4, 6-0, to earn the title of champion.
 
“I am extremely proud of the tournament that Janet put together this weekend,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “She beat three really talented players and competed so well. Janet has been working hard, so it is nice to see her work pay off.”
 
In the Flight 2 Singles finals, sophomore Maria Toran Ribes was not able to top Wendy Zhang of Rice and dropped the match, 6-1, 7-6. In Flight 3 Singles consolation, sophomore Tatiana Nikolaeva’s third-set rally fell short, losing to Minying Liang from North Texas, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Redshirt freshman Amber Policare couldn’t overcome Texas State’s Julia Navajo in Flight 6 Singles consolation, dropping her match, 6-0, 6-0. Playing Flight 7 Singles consolation, freshman Carla Pons Martorell fell to Carrie Casey from Sam Houston State, 7-6, 6-1.
